The Baptism of the Lord

Readings

Disney has come out with some wonderful movies over the years and in 1992 it released the animated movie sensation “Aladdin” into movie theaters.  Not only did it star Robin Williams as the lovable Genie of the Lamp, but Aladdin himself somehow spoke to the child inside all of us.  Although living on the streets of Agrabah and not looking like much on the outside, Aladdin himself recognized that there was so much more to him that people did not appreciate or understand.  We have all been there.  Feeling misunderstood, unappreciated and somehow not living up to the person who we feel we are inside.  Like Aladdin we confess:  “Riffraff, Street Rat. I got a question from my last post:  Are not the 12 Days of Christmas from Christmas (December 25th) to Epiphany (January 6th)?  Well…YES.  The 12 days of Christmas are from Christmas to the Feast of the Epiphany.  However, in the United States, the Feast of the Epiphany has been moved to Sunday for it’s liturgical celebration.  The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord falls within the Octave or eight day celebration of the Epiphay, just as we have an eight day octave of the celebration for Christmas.  So…technically, liturgically, and practically the Season of Christmas ends after the Sunday Masses for the Baptism of the Lord.

Still a few more days…

Well, all the Christmas trees are coming down, the nativity sets are being packed away and you can’t even find a radio station with carols anymore.  It may be January 4, 2010, but guess what…it is still the Christmas Season.  Offically the Christmas Season does not end until we celebrate the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, which is this upcoming Sunday.  So…don’t stop celebrating yet…Christmas is still here!!

On another note, I wish to thank everyone for making this Christmas and New Year at Saint Ignatius so wonderful.  I am overjoyed to be a part of this community and I am honored to call it home.  May God bless and keep you always.

A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone!!

The Feast of the Epiphnay

Readings

There are many top ten lists out there of gifts that were either given or received this Christmas.  Some of the finalists were the Wii Nintendo Console with Balance Board, the IPod Touch 8 GB Version, and even the Samsung 55” LED Television made most lists.  Electronics seem to be the biggest gifts this year. However…now that the gifts have been exchanged between family and friends and unwanted gifts have been returned to the store over the last couple of days it is now time that we gave ourselves a gift.  That’s right, give yourself a gift!!  You heard it here first.

But, be careful what you wish for, because the gifts I am going to suggest are not your typical items that you would find on a wish list.
